Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Director of Nursing – Surgery to provide strategic, clinical, and operational leadership for surgical services in New Mexico.
This role carries 24-hour accountability for assigned surgical departments and is responsible for ensuring clinical excellence, regulatory compliance, financial performance, and team development. The Director will serve as a key leader within the organization, driving quality outcomes while fostering strong collaboration with physicians and surgical staff.
Ideal Candidate Profile
- 5+ years of Operating Room (OR) experience
- Experience leading a robotics surgery program
- Background in high-volume surgical environments (600+ annual cases)
- Proven leadership in surgical services management
Key Responsibilities
Clinical & Operational Leadership
- Provide 24-hour oversight of assigned surgical departments
- Ensure delivery of safe, high-quality, patient-centered care
- Maintain compliance with regulatory standards and organizational policies
- Oversee clinical practice standards within surgical services
Administrative & Financial Oversight
- Manage departmental budgets and financial performance
- Oversee staffing models and resource allocation
- Monitor operational efficiency and case volume performance
Quality & Performance Management
- Evaluate and improve quality, patient satisfaction, and employee engagement metrics
- Lead performance improvement initiatives
- Serve as a change agent to implement strategic initiatives
Leadership & Collaboration
- Mentor and develop nursing leaders and frontline staff
- Establish strong collaborative relationships with surgeons and interdisciplinary teams
- Promote a culture of accountability, engagement, and clinical excellence
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited program
- If not currently BSN-prepared, must be enrolled in an accredited BSN program with a scheduled completion date
- Current RN license (or license recognized by the State Board of Nursing)
- BLS certification (required within 14 days of hire and prior to providing direct patient care)
- Minimum 3 years of clinical nursing experience
- 2–3 years of nursing leadership/management experience
- Strong critical thinking and independent decision-making skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification in a clinical specialty or nursing administration
- Experience managing surgical robotics programs
- Experience in high-acuity, high-volume surgical settings
